Energy storage and photoluminescence properties of Sm3+-doped CaTiO3 multifunctional ceramics

Abstract

With the rapid development of advanced electronic devices towards miniaturization, integration and multi-function, the development of single-phase materials with excellent energy storage and unique optical properties has become an important and challenging research frontier. However, it is a great challenge to achieve the synergy of high energy storage density and strong photoluminescence performance in a single matrix material. In this study, an innovative strategy is proposed to meet this challenge. By introducing Sm3+ into CaTiO3 ceramics with high dielectric constant, its dual-functional application potential in the field of energy storage and optoelectronics is explored. The breakdown field strength of the ceramics at the doping amount of 0.8 mol% reaches the maximum value of 200 kV/cm due to the smallest grain size and more grain boundaries, which is about 53.8% higher than that (130 kV/cm) of pure CaTiO3 ceramics. Due to the high breakdown field strength and low dielectric loss, the energy storage density is increased by about 152%, and the energy storage efficiency is above 95% in the wide range of 30 °C-150 °C and 1 Hz-300 Hz, showing excellent temperature stability and frequency stability of energy storage. Moreover, Sm3+ doped CaTiO3 ceramics have a strong orange-red light emission near 598 nm, and the maximum relative change of photoluminescence intensity reaches 62%. The excellent dielectric, energy storage and luminescence properties of Sm3+ doped CaTiO3 ceramics have potential applications in the fields of dielectric energy storage capacitors and optical devices.
