Prof. Pupa U. P. A. Gilbert (née Gelsomina De Stasio) is Professor of Physics at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, with appointments in Chemistry, Materials Science, and Geoscience, and a Visiting Faculty Scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory since 2019. She is a leading scholar in biomineralization and a pioneer of synchrotron spectromicroscopy methods (PEEM, PIC mapping) since 1989, using advanced light sources to investigate the formation mechanisms, structure, and properties of biominerals including coral skeletons, sea urchin spines, nacre, and tooth enamel. Her honors include Fellow of the American Physical Society (2010), Radcliffe Fellow at Harvard University (2014–2015), Fellow of the Mineralogical Society of America (2020), and the WARF Named Professorship at UW-Madison (2024). She was elected Vice-Chair of the Gordon Research Conference on Biomineralization 2026 and Chair for 2028. Her textbook “Physics in the Arts” reached its third edition and was translated into Chinese.
